Possibly the greatest dessert ever? We think it might be. It's certainly a family favourite in our house. Tweak this as you see fit - see my tips below for some ideas!

Ingredients

For the filling

  • 3 medium or 2 large bramley apples
  • 2 handfuls frozen mixed berries
  • 2 tbsp caster sugar

For the topping

  • 150g plain flour
  • 75g almost-melted butter
  • 110g caster sugar

Method

  1. 1Peel, core and chop the 2-3 Bramley apples into chunks. Add to a saucepan with 2 tbsp water and 2 tbsp caster sugar.
  2. 2Heat gently for 5-10 minutes until the apples are just beginning to soften. Add 2 handfuls of frozen berries and stir through.
  3. 3While that's cooking, weigh out 150g plain flour and 110g caster sugar into a mixing bowl. Pour over 75g almost-melted butter and mix with a spoon until it forms a crumbly texture.
  4. 4Tip the fruit into an ovenproof dish and top with the crumble.
  5. 5Bake at 160°C (fan) for 40 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Serve

Serve with ice cream, custard or double cream.

Tips

  • Add ½ tsp cinnamon to the apples for a flavour boost.
  • A handful of oats or flaked almonds in the crumble topping adds a nice texture.
  • The fruit mixture can be cooled, then topped with the crumble and chilled in the fridge for a few hours before baking.
